He finally went to Italy: Galleria dell'Accademia in Venice
Updated 12/16/2025
The Accademia is kind enough to group works by artist so we'll do that here too, to the extent possible.
Veronese
Just his works alone are worth the price of admission!
Feast in the House of Levi by Veronese, 1573. Zoom in on the details below!
Left detail.
Because yeah it's that good.
Virgin and Child with Saints Joseph, Francis, Jerome, Infant Saint John, and a Martyr Saint by Veronese, circa 1562.
Coronation of the Virgin by Veronese, 1583.
The Prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel by Veronese, 1570 - 1580.
Saint Jerome by Veronese, 1570 - 1580.
Marriage of St. Catherine by Veronese, 1565 - 1570.
The Assumption of the Virgin by Veronese, 1585 - 1587. For want of a zoom lense a masterpiece was ill-photographed!
Tintoretto
Crucifixion by Tintoretto, circa 1555. This one doesn't look quite like him... I wonder if it was more someone in the workshop?
Portraits of the Members of the Scuola dei Mercanti by Tintoretto, 1591 - 1592. He did a bunch of group portraits like this; I guess they go a little quicker if you put everyone in the same outfit.
The Deposition by Tintoretto, 1550 - 1560.
St. Mark Saves the Slave from Torture by Tintoretto, 1547 - 1548.
Tiepolo
For clarification, on this site "Tiepolo" by itself refers to the father, Giambattista. There's also a work by his son Giandomenico here.
Scourge of the Serpents by Tiepolo, 1732 - 1734. The space was such that this was impossible to get in one photo.
St. Joseph with the Infant Jesus and Saints Francis of Paola, Anne, Anthony, and Peter of Alcantara by Tiepolo, 1730 - 1735.
Feast of the Cross by Tiepolo, early 1750s. He was good at both large paintings (like this) and small.
Diana Discovers Callisto's Pregnancy by Tiepolo, 1720 - 1721.
Institution of the Rosary by Tiepolo, circa 1737.
Pietro Belloti
The Parcae Lachesis (The Parcae and the Thread of Life) by Bellotti, circa 1654. Normally in the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart.
Detail.
Old Drinker by Bellotti, 1670 - 1675. Normally in Castello Sforezco in Milan.
Old Peasant Woman with a Boy by Bellotti, circa 1680 - 1690. Normally in Museo d'Arte Sorlini.
Old Singer by Bellotti, circa 1680 - 1690. Normally in a private collection.
Detail of Peasants in the Open Air by Bellotti, 1685 - 1690.
All the others
Visions of the Hereafter by Hieronymus Bosch, 1505 - 1515. His angels and devils are so out there, even more than guys like Giotto!
Crucifixion and Apotheosis of Ten Thousand Martyrs from Mount Ararat by Vittore Carpaccio, 1515. The only early renaissance paintings I like are the ones remniscient of Bosch.
The Duke Receiving the Ring by Paris Bordon, 1533 - 1535.
Resurrection of Lazarus by Leandro Bassano, circa 1592.
The Philosopher Refuses Temptations by Giovanni Langetti, 1660 - 1665. Normally in Museo della Città Luigi Tonini in Rimini.
Democritus by Jusepe de Ribera, 1629 - 1631. Normally at the Prado in Madrid.
St. Romuald by Carl Loth, 1670s.
Circe and Ulysses by Francesco Maffei, 1655 - 1660. Mr. Maffei, where have you been all my life?
Perseus and Medusa by Francesco Maffei, late 1660s. These are great.
Witch by Salvator Rosa, 1647 - 1650. Normally in the Uffizi in Florence.
Old Woman with Skull by an unknown Venetian painter, 1670 - 1700. Normally at the Musée des Beaux-arts in Nimes.
Old Woman in Meditation by Antonio Carneo, circa 1670. Normally at the Musei del Castello in Udine.
Descent from the Cross by Luca Giordano, circa 1665.
Three Angels Appearing to Abraham by Giandomenico Tiepolo, 1773. The younger Tiepolo's no slouch either!
Daniel in the Lion's Den by Pietro da Cortona, 1663 - 1664.
Erminia and Vafrino Find the Wounded Tancredi by Gianantonio Guardi, 1750 - 1755.
Massacre of the Innocents by Sebastiano Mazzoni, 1660 - 1664. This one has an ethereal quality I love.
