Intro
The saga continues. I found the whole Italy site gratifying and/or helpful enough (to me) that I figured I'd continue with the same format for a trip through Castilla-León in Spain, a region to which I'd never been.
Why now? The end goal of this excursion was to view the eclipse in Valladolid on August 12th, 2026. It so happens that Valladolid is one of the places in Spain least likely to have cloud cover, and a good friend has a cousin there who offered us her apartment, so it was kind of a no-brainer. Given I was already in the Bilbao area it seemed like a fun idea to make my way south slowly but surely. This journey was by car so there are moments from along the way between cities as well.
Pretty much everyone I talked to raved about this whole region. Everyone had their own take but there were a few small towns that kept coming up.
How did you decide what to show here? Given I wasn't expecting to see painted masterpieces (but in the end I did, working in an afternoon visit to El Prado), this displays more or less whatever struck my fancy, whether that was impressive (!) landscapes or quirky religious art. Every city gets its own page and that's about it.
Lessons learned: If you're driving South from the Basque country toward Burgos, take the scenic route! Because of a stop I wanted to make on the way, I ended up on back roads and therefore seeing amazing things I would not have otherwise. After you climb the mesa upon which Burgos sits there is an area with hundreds, or maybe thousands, of wind turbines. God only knows how much power that provides! I didn't stop for a photo but should have. Crazy!
